Algebraic topology is the study of algebraic objects attached to topological spaces. One circle can be deformed into the other by stretching, but without cutting or gluing. There is significant overlapping interests with mathematical physics (both within the Mathematics and Physics departments). I'll sketch how ideas coming from the study of CAT(0) cube complexes were used by Henry Wilton and me to settle isomorphism problems for profinite groups, and to settle a conjecture in combinatorics concerning the extension problem for sets of partial permutations.

The visual nature of geometry makes it initially more accessible than other parts of mathematics, such as algebra or number theory.
