However experiments have shown that some species are able to ‘sleep swim’, in which they are essentially unconscious while meandering around the ocean. This highly migratory fish moves north from the mid-Atlantic area during the spring and back southward during the fall, spending roughly the months of May through October feeding on Great Bay’s abundant food resources, including river herring, pollock and silversides.

The great white shark is a prime example of the Laminidae family, and can be found in almost all latitudes. Since then, sharks have diversified into over 500 species. One thing that I really like about aquatic life is how much variety there is. Regional fisheries management organizations, such as the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna, manage fish species that travel between international lines. It has long, spiraling, white arms with some maroon tentacles that can reach 15 feet long. The Museum also holds three other specimens, the most recent caught off Bermagui, New South Wales, in 2000.

Natural History: The spiny dogfish feeds upon practically all smaller fishes such as herring, sardines, anchovies, smelts and even small spiny dogfish as well as crabs. At distances less than 15m (45ft) vision is an important sense for sharks and many have an adaptation which allows them to optimise all the available light in dimly illuminated water. The tiger shark must be able to twist and turn in the water easily when hunting to support its varied diet, whereas the porbeagle shark, which hunts schooling fish such as mackerel and herring, has a large lower lobe to help it keep pace with its fast-swimming prey. Species-level legislative protection is an important conservation goal in countries where Whale Shark are still caught, either as a target or bycatch, including China, Mozambique, Oman, Pakistan and Tanzania. Looking like something out of a nightmare, the deep-sea creature is rarely seen. There were 1,184 Whale Shark sightings in the Indian Ocean recorded by tuna purse-seine vessel logbooks between 1991 and 2007, with almost all of these from the Western Indian Ocean (Sequeira et al. 2013a).
