The movement, founded on the early Karl Marx (1818–1883), attracted wide support. It’s also ironic that while the French political dominance was vanishing before their eyes, their dominance became confined mostly in the sphere of art and culture. For one thing, the Protestant emphasis on early Christian experiences led them to increase their teaching of the idea that this world is nothing more than a preparation for the Kingdom of God in the next life, something that was anathema to humanists, who promoted the idea of living and enjoying this life here and now.

The leaders sought and received state sanction, often even a share of the tax money for their activities, putting them at par with established churches. In the spread of classical learning William Caxton (1421-91), the first English printer, played an important part. Having an essence meant that human beings could be placed within a larger whole, a kosmos, that provided the standard for human flourishing. The term "humanism" can be ambiguous, and there has been a persistent confusion between the several, related uses of the term because different intellectual movements have identified with it over time. [1] In 1856, still before the word was associated with secularism, German historian and philologist Georg Voigt used humanism to describe Renaissance humanism, the movement that flourished in the Italian Renaissance to revive classical learning (this definition won wide acceptance among historians in many nations). [4] During the French Revolution, and soon after in Germany (by the Left Hegelians ), humanism began to refer to philosophies and morality centred on human kind, without attention to any notions of the divine.
