A popular form of Latin-American dance music, characterized by Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Cuban big-band dance melodies and elements of jazz and rock. Other distinctive features include overt opera and operetta influences, wild and uncontrolled storytelling, and as a general rule, bold and highly emotional vocals. This appears to be a uniquely African quality; jazz manifestations include mutes for brass instruments, simultaneously humming and blowing on a flute or trombone, the rasping texture employed by saxophonists, the electronic altering of tone quality, and the use of devices by drummers to produce ringings (e.g., the insertion of rivets in a cymbal to create a sizzle sound while vibrating). 12.

He wrote numerous popular rags combining syncopation, banjo figurations and sometimes call-and-response, which led to the ragtime idiom being taken up by classical composers including Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky. An excellent history covering both country blues and urban blues, including regional emphasis.
