In order to show that he scrutinized all religious groups known to him, including the Bohemians and the Muslims and emphasized that they all imply the same veneration of truth. For Hobbes, though, the laws of nature are rational from a practical standpoint: they are the sorts of laws that any rational person should adopt to save his or her hide: A law of nature (lex naturalis) is a precept or general rule, found out by reason, by which a man is forbidden to do that which is destructive of his life or takes away the means of preserving the same, and to omit that by which he thinks it may be best preserved. [Leviathan, 14.3] Thus, the laws of nature are nothing like rational principles of mathematics; they are grounded only in the human desire to survive, and thus are rational only in a pragmatic sense.

Cicero was another man who wrote about philosophy at just about the same time as Lucretius. This section is certainly filled with gross oversimplifications of many arguments, but that's ok because a) this is a website for the general public and not a two-million-word academic dissertation on all philosophers in history, and b) this is surely filled with gross oversimplifications of my ideas as well.
