A rejection of all philosophy is in itself philosophy. There is in fact another Hebrew word that does mean �physical image� � the word toar � but the passage from Genesis doesn�t use it, preferring instead zelem: I hold that the Hebrew equivalent of [physical] �form� in the ordinary use of the word, that is, the figure and shape of a thing, is toar.

Saint Augustine, born in what is now Souk-Ahras, Algeria, in ad 354, brought a systematic method of philosophy to Christian theology. The existence of a sensible reality whose existence requires a cause. He accepts the immortality of the soul and it is created by God. Actual is what we are. "A human being is potentially a criminal or a saint," writes McCleod (65), "but he is not potentially an elephant." But the question, long neglected in main-stream analytic epistemology, of how such authority is related to rationality is in many crucial respects a secular analogue of the passionately disputed /155/ medieval question of how faith is related to reason.
