It is known that traumatic occurrences--sexual or physical abuse, loss of parents, the disaster of war--often have a profound impact on the lives of children. In relation to the study population of children and adolescents with PTSD secondary to sexual abuse, the apparent benefit of adding SSRI to psychotherapy was demonstrated in a small-size double-blind RCT in 10- to 17-year olds. In PTSD, the fear response to these memories can sometimes be so great that patients are unable to revisit them, even in the safety of a therapy session.
