Telling one’s story (the “trauma narrative”) and directly facing the grief, anxiety, and guilt related to trauma enables many survivors to go on with their lives rather than getting stuck in unspoken despair and helplessness. Avoid using drugs, alcohol or smoking to relax. The results of these sessions are still immeasurable and controversial because most are supervised or facilitated with people who do not have sufficient mental health background, although some reported that the sessions were helpful. In the past it was believed that Post -Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) could not occur following a traumatic brain injury. This can be resolved through a process whereby the person is asked to focus on trauma-related imagery, negative thoughts, emotions, and body sensations as his or her eyes track the back and forth movement of the therapist's fingers across the visual field for 30 seconds or longer. It is still not known if the soldier accused of killing 17 Afghans was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder — but even if he had been, that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war.
